Rowing at the University of Washington

Founded in 1861, the University of Washington, one of the West Coast's oldest public institutions, boasts a century-long legacy in premier Pac-12 athletics. With 19 men's and 5 women's national championships, the Huskies rank second nationally. They also clinched gold at the 1936 Olympics, inspiring 'The Boys in the Boat.' The university provides significant financial support to rowers, covering an average of 72% of tuition for male athletes and 58% for women's athletes.

Coaching Excellence

The coaching staff at Washington men’s rowing, led by Michael Callahan, brings over two decades of experience to the program. As head coach for 16 years, Callahan has guided the team to unprecedented success, winning seven IRA varsity eight national championships, including a historic five consecutive titles from 2011 to 2015. Callahan's commitment to athlete development extends to the classroom, fostering academic excellence. His impact on the sport is evident in the numerous rowers who have achieved success at the Olympics and international competitions.

Yasmin "Yaz" Farooq has led the Washington women's rowing program to unparalleled success since taking the helm in 2016. In her first season, the team achieved a historic NCAA Championship sweep, securing victories in all three grand finals. In 2019, the Huskies accomplished another remarkable sweep at the NCAA Championships, solidifying their status as a dominant force in collegiate rowing. Farooq's coaching prowess earned her numerous accolades, including the CRCA National Coach of the Year and Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors. Under her guidance, Husky rowers have excelled academically, with many earning CRCA All-America and Scholar-Athlete distinctions.

The Conibear Boathouse

Cutting-Edge Facilities

Set along the Montlake Cut, the Conibear Shellhouse, Washington rowing's home since 1949, recently underwent a modern facelift in 2004. The boathouse is located on campus and is home to both the men’s and women’s programs, providing access to a fleet of boats, RP3 & C2 ergs, and a dining hall shared with all student-athletes. The nearby Dempsey Indoor Center complements training with a weight room located next door to the boathouse. Positioned on the Montlake Cut, this historic hub is where tradition meets cutting-edge training, shaping Huskies into champions.

Year-Round Competition

Washington's rowing program boasts one of the most intense schedules in collegiate rowing. Their season begins with fall regattas, featuring races like the Head of the Charles and the Head of the Lake. When spring arrives, the Huskies escalate their training, going on camps in Chula Vista. Weekends at Lake Sammish, north of Seattle, serve as training grounds for skill refinement. This year, they're bound for Florida, ready to take on Yale and Brown. Their ultimate rivalry unfolds against Cal in the annual 'Dual' race.

Washington also plays host to the prestigious Windermere Cup, a multi-day event attracting international crews. The season's pinnacle events are the Pac-12 Championships, IRA National Championships, and NCAA Championships. It's an arduous yet fulfilling schedule, symbolizing their unwavering dedication to excellence.
